| Language Arts Instructional Focus: Reading Comprehension Strategy: Synthesis. Good readers need to be able to figure out the main idea when reading. Put all of the details and bits of information together to answer the questions: What is the author's message? From what point of view is this article written? If I could name this chapter it would be called... Read Aloud: I am currently reading a non-fiction book called "The Amazing International Space Station". Shared Reading: Democracy: Action and Participation; and "Dramarama". Also local and international current events in Social Studies. We have been reading together a graphic novel comic called "Galileo's Galaxy". Guided Reading: The students have begun a non-fiction book club. They are reading one of 4 different graphic novels under the Space science theme. Independent Reading: Book-Talks and daily independent reading happen after lunch when we are not doing guided reading. Home Reading: Students are required to read 30 minutes at home daily. They need to be consistently completing their "Reading Rainbow" pages as a home reading log. Many students are now on the green and blue pages! For home reading the students may read what they want independently. It is important that they choose these books and to read for enjoyment. That includes anything like comic books, favorite authors, series books, sports books, the newspaper, graphic novels, magazines, and so on. Writing: We are finishing our fifth trait of writing: "Sentence Fluency". Sentence Fluency = a variety of lengths + different types (.?!) + smooth flow and natural sounding dialogue + sentence combining and separating - run-on sentences. I will expect the students to do the following in Grade 6 writing: Ideas: Have a clear main idea, include interesting information and details that are specific, as well as leave out "filler". The students need to write on specific topics they know lots about. Focused not fuzzy writing! No "Swiss Cheese" writing full of holes! Organization: Writing leads that grab and hook the reader, staying on topic, keeping details in the write order, and writing satisfying conclusions are the main lessons of this unit. Voice: Individuality, voice suiting purpose, adding energy to writing, writing about topics you enjoy and are enthusiastic about lead to better voice. Word Choice: Strong action words, using the senses, reading from context to learn new words, avoiding overused words, are some of the lessons the students are participating in. Sentence Fluency: Write different lengths of sentences for variety: short (1-5 words), medium (6-12) and long (13-20+); use different starts for sentences; write different types of sentences (.!?); and write dialogue that sounds natural. Conventions: Write using proper capitalization, grammar, and punctuation rules; "No excuses" on commonly misspelled words that are posted on the black "Tricky Word Wall"; use editor's symbols to catch convention problems before writing up a final draft. Correct spelling errors using a dictionary, or ask someone for help if needed. Read it aloud to see and hear the errors. The "6 Traits of Writing" is the foundation of my writing program. Each of the six traits: Conventions, Sentence Fluency, Word Choice, Voice, Organization, and Ideas, will be taught to the students by using plenty of examples from children's literature; samples of low, medium, and high quality writing; and daily, scheduled time for student writing. Mathematics 6 Current unit: "Angles" Problem Solving I am teaching the students the steps in problem solving: FIND OUT, CHOOSE A STRATEGY, SOLVE IT, LOOK BACK. Social Studies Democracy in the Iroquois Confederacy. The students are doing their second Democracy in Action project of the year. They will be doing class presentations using the SmartBoards. Science "Flight" and "Air and Aerodynamics". We have begun our unit by designing and modifying parachutes. The students will be building model rockets soon. We are going to have a rocket launch at the end of the year to celebrate this unit! Information and Communication Technology The students are doing PowerPoint presentations for their "Take Action" project in Social Studies. French as a Second Language Teacher: Miss Crouse Music Teacher: Mrs. Weber Handbell club is Tuesdays at lunch. Art We have been doing some painting!
