Magnet Study Guide

facts:
1. The ends of magnets are the strongest.
2. The magnetic field is the invisible force around a magnet.
3. The ends of magnets are called the poles.
4. Opposite ends of magnets attract.
5. Like ends of magnets repel.
6. Hanging a magnet by a string forces the magnet to point north (magnetic north)

Rules when using magnets
1. Never bring a magnet near a computer or any electronic device with a monitor.
2. Don’t drop or bang magnets.
3. Always store magnets with opposite ends touching. (N - S)

Metals that attract to a magnet:
1. iron
2. steel
3. cobalt
4. lodestone
5. nickel
6. alnico (aluminum, nickel, cobalt) (man-made magnet)

Temporary magnet:
1. You can lay a piece of iron or steel on a magnet for a short time and that piece of iron/steel will become temporarily magnetized.

2. You stroke a piece of iron or steel against a magnet in on direction, about 15 times and that piece of iron or steel becomes magnetized temporarily.
