Create your own web page free and easy!!
Set up your account

Start by printing these instructions so you don't have to navigate back here

  Go to
http://geocities.yahoo.com and mark this link in your favorites.

Under "Get Started" on the left side, click the "free" link

Next, you'll be tempted to click the "Free" link in the upper left, don't!

Instead, in the middle of the top, you'll see GeoCities Free, click the "Sign Up" button

Click "sign up now" on the top left side

The form that pops up is self-explanatory.  Just keep in mind what you want your website to be about.  Whatever you choose for your Yahoo ID will be part of your web address!  (a.k.a. mrjeremyryan = www.geocities.com/mrjeremyryan)

If there is a risk you'll forget it, write it down!!

Side note:
yahoo mail recently updated their email client.  If you sign up for a free email account you'll get 100MB of email storage (compared to 2MB on hotmail) and you can transfer files up to 10MB.

You'll see plenty of opportunities to upgrade from the free web page option.  It's doubtful you'll need it.  If you don't mind the little banner in the corner, the free option is just fine.
After clicking "Submit this form" your account information will be emailed to the address given.

Remember if you had a new email address created, you will need to login to
www.yahoo.com using the new username (mrjeremyran) and the password that you just created.

Open your email, and click "Important! Click here to activate your new account"

Click "Continue to Yahoo"

You are forced to choose at least one type of topic for advertisement on your site.  This is the little image in the corner and the reason they can justify giving you a site for free.

Pick an option and click "continue"

Click "Build your own web site now"

BUILD YOUR SITE!

Now the fun begins!  You'll quickly learn that Page Builder and Page Wizard are your best friends.

If you are planning on using pictures on your site, I strongly recommend downloading
Quick Epics

If you don't use Epics or some similar file shrinking program, you won't be able to upload the large files and even if you can, the dial up users of your website will get frustrated quickly with waiting for pages to load.
Using Quick Epics

After downloading Quick Epics, go to your pictures folder and create a file called "Shrink".  Leave it empty for now.

Open Quick Epics, on the right side click the batch defaul tab. Make sure the "Resize" and "JPEG Compression boxes have a check in them.  I use the medium options for both of these.  ???
This is based on photos loaded from a 3.1 megapixil digital camera.  If you are scanning in your photos you might want to play with the settings to get the desired quality while keeping the file size small.  The smaller the file size the more photos you can put on your site.

Next, click File, Open Batch in the upper left corner.

Search your photo folders for the files that you want to shrink.  (Example, I have all of my Memorial Day files in one folder) Open the folder, select the first file, hold down the shift key while clicking the last file.  This will highlight all the pictures in that particular folder.

Click Open

Important: Under Output folder, click the "Specify Folder" button.
On the right you will see a folder icon that allows you to search for the output destination of these new smaller files.  This will not effect your original photos.  They will still stay in the same format and in the same location as they were previously.

On the right side, click My Pictures, find the shrink folder you created earlier. (If you did not create the shrink folder, you can do it now by clicking "new")

Create a subfolder under the shrink folder by clicking new.  Name the folder.  In this case I would name it MemorialDayPhotos.  (The photos will only upload if there are no spaces in the file name).?

Once your output folder is set click "apply" and "ok"

In the upper left, click on the third icon in, a pull down menu appears.  Click "Execute or finish executing batch"

You're done, the new smaller files are under the shrink folder and the originals are wherever they were previously.
Now that you have your pictures ready to upload, it is time to create your home page!
