Friends and Relationships:
Each year, around this time, I write a letter to one of my close friends and personally tell them about how they have positively impacted my life throughout that year. I feel it is the highest honor I can give someone and I am yet to be told that someone did not appreciate it.
Why would I do this? Well, to understand this is to have a better understanding of some of my core values. First, friendships to me are the most valuable things one can have in this world. Some people look to romance and significant others for most of their companionship, but I feel that having a core network of good friends gives the companionship of a romance without the pressure and guilt. Now, don't get me wrong, I love love just as much as the next guy. However, unlike so many of my counterparts, I'm not actively seeking it either. I get mine (I'll leave it at that). Instead, I focus much of my attention on my current friendships. I feel that your friends, more than say a lover, will tell you exactly what you''re like, what your strengths and weaknesses are, and much more. Also, my friends provide a level of "love" that is comfortable without being clostrophobic. I am uninterested in a long term relationship with someone I have to talk to every day (at this point in my life, anyway). Let's face it, I sometimes don't talk to some of my friends for days or weeks. Othertimes, friends of mime will call me everyday driving me to the moon (I don't do phones too well).
In short, my friends make me who I am. They shape me and mold me with each interaction. Perhaps one day I will be able to settle down and have only one main "friend" to keep me company. Until then, I will enjoy the companionship of the many friends I currently have. Whether each realizes or not, all are VERY important to me. |
