| A-Lee - On the side away from the wind, on the leeward side. Abaft - Behind, or nearer the stern. Abeam - At right angles to the middle of the ship's side. Aft - The entire area toward the stern of a vessel from amidships After - Toward the stern of a vessel Aloft - Any area above the deck of a vessel Alow - Down or downwards Amidships - In or toward the middle of the ship's lengthwise direction. Athwart - Across, from one side to the other. Bearing - The direction to an object in relation to the ship. Bow - The front part of the ship. Fore - The entire area toward the bow of a vessel from amidships. Fore-and-aft - Lying in the direction of the ship's length. Forward - A position near or towards the bow of a vessel. Heading - The direction of the ship�s course as shown on the compass. Lee or Leeward - The side of the boat away from the wind. Port - The left side of a vessel facing forward. Starboard - The right side of a vessel facing forward. Stern - The rear part of a ship. Tack - The direction of travel of a vessel in relation to the wind. Windward - In the direction from which the wind is blowing. |
