Welcome to my website. I am a gay writer who has been seriously writing fiction and non-fiction for the last ten years. Funny, offbeat and peculiar describes my writing well and its these three characteristics which appear frequently in the following selections I have made for this site.
In the fiction selection I have included two excerpts from my unpublished novel, The Search for Mr Wright. This comic-serious novel is a humorous look at the search for the perfect partner. It follows the exploits of Andrew Wright, a 25 year-old gay man who is searching for love and romance in a cynical gay world. On his journey he discovers some very peculiar characters including fanatical opera queens, wild cross dressers, and artistic voyeurs. Andrew's search for love seems almost as mythical as the Holy Grail.
Equally funny and offbeat are my nonfiction writings. A State of Domestic Bliss is a collection of unique essays which asks and answers the question 'how do two men form a lasting relationship?' It's also a journey of discovery, much like the Search for Mr Wright, by two men trying to build a relationship and the pitfalls waiting for them along the way. There are also just as many colourful, though real-life characters in this collection which add to the humour.
The ordinary and the everyday are important themes in my work and the third collection of my work of non-fiction includes a range of essays about things that have affected me on a profound level. Whether its September 11 or the simple act of getting a haircut I like to find significance in everything from the small to the large.
As to myself, its probably worth listing a few basic facts. I am a 40-something gay man who worked in the field of gay journalism between 1992-1999. I have very wide interests that cover the high and low of culture from the appreciation of opera to the appreciation of Madonna (I has guest-lectured on Madonna and Popular Culture at university level). I am also at home with reading Oscar Wilde or watching Star Trek. One of my great passions is movies and I love to watch a wide variety of genres, particularly Film Noir. My enjoyment of music is also wide-ranging and its not unusual for me to have some John Coltrane playing one day and some Phillip Glass the next. I currently live with my partner in Canberra (one of the 'stars' of Domestic Bliss).
I hope my writing will give the reader as much pleasure reading as it has given me in writing. |
