Mushroom Kingdom Politics
The Mushroom Kingdom, as it is known, has a very different political system than our own. The MK, as well as many other kingdoms on the parallel Earth, is not a democracy, nor is it a republic. Not at all. The Mushroom Kingdom follows feudalism, which was practiced back in the 1400's. Let me show you how it works.
King Toadstool, the Mushroom king, has 8 barons, or perhaps you know them as "The SMB3 Kings and King Fret". Well, they're really not kings at all, they're barons. Now that we got that out of the way, let me tell you what these barons are for. King Toadstool granted "fiefs" to the barons, who gave an oath of homage and fealty to him, and had to give Toadstool political and military service, in terms of the grant. What are fiefs, you ask? A fief is what you democratic simpletons (or parliamentary simpletons, if you wish) call a "Land". The fiefs are, Grass Land, Desert Land, Water Land, Ice Land, Giant Land, Jewelry Land, Sky Land, and Pipe Land. So anyway, the barons, in turn, might grant portions of their fiefs to knights who swore homage and fealty to them and served them according to their grants. Now, these barons can be fired, so to speak, if, for example, Grass Land was divided into 13 seigneuries, and the King Toadstool required 10 knights. (This happens many a time, if they had enough protection, Peach wouldn't be captured so often.) The baron could grant 10 of the seigneuries to knights and therefore, be prepared to provide the required service to the king. Now on the other hand, the baron could keep Grass Land all for his own, and keep the knights in his castle, although the baron would be responsible for feeding and arming the knights himself, but the knights don't like that, at all, and want to be seigneurs themselves, sort of the democratic equivalent to a "governor". And now you can see why the MK has bad defense.
