I Only Go Where God Sends Me

by Colin K. Stewart

Fall 1848, Dorchester County, Maryland. The feel of frost is in the air. A NEGRO MAN climbs a mound of corn. TWO HUNDRED SLAVES
move around the stack. The Negro Man leads them in song. As they all sing, they husk the corn, swiftly, hands moving in time to the beat of the song.

SLAVES
Masr's slaves is slick and fat,
Oh! Oh! Oh!
Shine jus' like a beaver hat,
Oh! Oh! Oh!

REFRAIN
Turn out here and shuck dis corn,
Oh! Oh! Oh!
Biggest pile seen since I be born
Oh! Oh! Oh!

One of BARRETT'S SLAVEs, a big young man, stands silently at the foot of the corn stack. HARRIET TUBMAN, age 19, adjusts her bright bandanna, watching him, aware that the OVERSEER is watching him, too.
