Chicago Comic Con (Wizard World) 2002
MJ Norton's patchy photo tour of the weekend
A supplement to my August
Legends zine report
(Plenty of photos here - though I still have plenty more I might add shortly, and doubtless embellishments to add to the text- so depending upon your connection speed you might want to give these a few minutes to load so you can have a smooth tour.)
This was the first time I'd made it to Chicago for one of these conventions since 1994. Grant and his family were nice enough to invite me, sight unseen, to stay with them. This made Grant my wheel-man and general tour guide, too. When I revise this site a little later I might include some of the pics I took as he took me on a tour around the edge of Chicago just after picking me up at O'Hare.
We spent most of the evening of July 4th down at the man-made beach of Lake Michigan. Sorry, no shots of the wimpy smoke bombs, crazed, sparkler-wielding Lithuanian woman or the family of East Indians who had smuggled in rockets and seemed to be trying to use them to shoot down Grant's wife's (Nancy's) kite! See what you miss by staying at home and leaving the reporting to a wallflower? >>>
<<<<A little farther down the beach were park areas, bordered by a segmented, concrete retaining wall/ bench, with each section painted by different, local artists. This is a miniscule fraction of what was there, but the best shot of it I took.
The Rosemont Convention Center. Innocent-looking out in the daylight, who would dream thousands of people with severe social skill deficits lurked within?  >>>
<<<  Here's one of the shots from the con floor -- must have been fairly early or late for there to be that much open space.
DC's area was an open, airy affair that was easy to move into and through, with plenty of heroic images and a decidedly patriotic feel to it. Grant couldn't resist posing for this one... >>>
<<< With Marvel redirecting its cash to get more talent at the show, they were almost invisible in the Diamond area, leaving Crossgen - on it's bloody path towards what they hope will be something approaching market dominance in a few years - with one of the more visually imposing areas this time out.
Some people attend these shows in costume. Here was a very nice attempt at a classic Daredevil costume - which stood out in contrast to the handful of people who decided to attend in tan bathrobes as Jedi Knights.>>>
<<< Then there's this crew, who came as an entire super-team!
This Harley Quinn had fairly good makeup and costume, though the Joker's she's with must be from some universe where Batman and Robin are out of action and he has a lot more time for snacks. (Yeah, yeah, as if I should be talking... but I didn't come dressed up as the Joker, did I?) This was still fairly early in the con, the floor was crowded and I was still getting used to the camera (that's my blanket excuse for everything here, so remember it) so when a smiling fan bobbed down into the frame, well, that's the shot I got. Live with it.  >>>
<<< Though they didn't show up until Saturday (I find it hard to believe I'd have missed them on Friday) there were a couple of booths specializing in edged-weapons, maces, flails and leather armor. It's a good thing this is such a stable cross-section of society.
Why stop here? Let's get to the rest of the weekend!
