SUICIDE SQUAD

no.7

"Act of War"

Writer: Kieth Giffen

Penciller: Paco Medina

Inker: Joe Sanchez (I only know his first name because they mention it on DC's website.)

      Damn.

As mentioned in my review of issue #6 I had become comfortable with dropping this title, finding it to be more irritating than enjoyable.

Then came issue #7, and I'm trying to figure where the switch flipped. Did it flip in the creative team, and this was a better issue, or did it just flip in my head, so that I'm suddenly more predisposed to something I'd just written off?

Oh, I still hate the artwork, which is both goofy and unattractive save for some.... er... feminine wiles also mentioned last time. I also still wouldn't mind seeing Rock, Bulldozer and what's-er-name (I don't believe I've thought enough of her so far to bother noticing) send on a mission of no return either.

Still... the team dujour itself is becoming more interesting with this issue - maybe it's the addition of Deadshot finally having some impact? The scenes back at the Luthor White House help give some weight to the current story, and even the magical islanders on their magical island appear to be getting some interesting dimensions as we see a little less dogma and a little more thought in at least some of them.

     Sheesh.

I didn't order #9, but if next issue - which I believe concludes this story - keeps my interest I might order #10 and pick up #9 at a comics shop in between. It's certainly not Ostrander's Squad, and that's a step down, but maybe it's finally getting some positive qualities of its own.

How's this series working for you?
