The Pull List!
Okay, this is a list of the comics due to be on sale Thursday, September 5th (Labor Day throws things off by a day next week) - and since I get my comics via Westfield I won't see these for a few weeks later than you who pick them up each week at the comics shop. Still -- I've marked the ones I've ordered and will eventually be reading. Anyone care to recommend a favorite on the list that I'm not reading? Post any recommendations, questions or comments on the embassy messageboard. I see these lists every week and decided I'd like to do something with the information. Not a very heavy week for my comics buys, I see, but there are some good items there.
21 DOWN #1,$2.95, DC COMICS
ALIAS #14 (MR),$2.99, MARVEL COMICS (By far the best thing Marvel's put out in their Max line so far. Bendis is telling solid stories with interesting, believable characters. Michael Gaydos' artwork is understated but strong. In general, the weakest elements of this series are the covers and that I have to wait a month between issues. This issue is... the fourth part of an ongoing story, so even with the splash page recap it's probably not the best place to jump in. If you can dig up the previous few issues, though - and if you have a good retailer who doesn't bag and inflate the price of comics from the past several months - I'd recommend picking them up. The hardcover collecting the first few story arcs is also a thing of beauty, but at roughly $30 it's still pretty pricey.)
ALTER EGO #17,$5.95, TWOMORROWS PUBLISHING (The revived Roy Thomas fanzine as a full magazine. I forget what the foci were going to be in this issue, but as with Comic Book Artist the issues are generally worth looking at if you have an interest in comics that extends back more than a few years.)
BABYHEAD MAGAZINE #1 (MR),$3.95, SLAVE LABOR GRAPHICS
BASTARD #9 VAMPIRE (PART 1 OF 2) (MR),$3.95, VIZ
BETTY & VERONICA #179 ,$1.99,ARCHIE COMIC PUBLICATIONS
BETTY & VERONICA DOUBLE DIGEST #109 ,$3.29, ARCHIE COMIC PUBLICATIONS
BIG DADDY DANGER #2 (Of 9),$2.95, DC COMICS
CIVILIAN JUSTICE #1 ,$3.99, BEYOND COMICS INC
CRUSADES #19 (MR) ,$2.95, DC COMICS (The penultimate issue of this series, I gambled that they'd be releasing it in trade editions and it appears that this time I've lost out. Oh, well.)
DETECTIVE COMICS #774,$2.75, DC COMICS
DOOM PATROL #12 ,$2.50, DC COMICS  (Frankly I was so repelled by the artwork in the first few issues - which I only looked through - that I've given this series a miss so far. For many that's a narrow view for rejecting a series, but the money only stretches so far, and while I'll deal with artwork I'm not really enjoying if the characters and stories are of strong interest, those would have to be exceptionally strong to overcome this "fan favorite" car wreck.)
ESSENTIAL UNCANNY X-MEN TP ,$14.95, MARVEL COMICS
EXILES #17 ,$2.25, MARVEL COMICS
FORGE #6 (Note Price),$11.95, CROSSGEN COMICS
GREEN ARROW #16,$2.50, DC COMICS
HAWKMAN #7 ,$2.50, DC COMICS
HELLBLAZER HARD TIME TP,$9.95,DC COMICS (Honestly, I don't recall if I ordered this one or not. Trades are the only form I'm picking up Vertigo items these days, and Hellblazer has run hot and cold for me over the years. I was disappointed with the Azzarello issues I tried - he works much better playing with his own toys over in 100 Bullets - finding his version of Constantine to be... randier than what I prefer, and if this was more of that run I might have decided to give this volume a miss.)
HELLBOY THE THIRD WISH #2 (Of 2) ,$2.99, DARK HORSE COMICS (I love Mignola's Hellboy work, but this is one of the many items I only pick up in completed form, usually trade collections.)
HELLSPAWN #13 ,$2.50, IMAGE COMICS
JETCAT CLUBHOUSE TP ,$10.95, ONI PRESS INC.
JUSTICE LEAGUE ADVENTURES #11 ,$2.25, DC COMICS
LAB RATS #6 ,$2.50, DC COMICS (I seem to recall John Byrne doing interesting comics once upon a time...)
LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN BOOK ONE (I already have the individual issues, so I don't think I sprang for this, but who knows? Placing an order at home, at the keyboard, often at 3 in the morning... It can make some of the packages I get interesting.)
LIBERTY MEADOWS #27,$2.95, IMAGE COMICS
LOONEY TUNES #94,$2.25, DC COMICS
MERIDIAN #27,$2.95, CROSSGEN COMICS
MUTANT X FUTURE SHOCK #1,$3.50, MARVEL COMICS
NEON GENESIS EVANGELION PART 7 #4 (OF 7) ,$2.95, VIZ
NEW X-MEN #131,$2.25, MARVEL COMICS
OH MY GODDESS PART XII #3 LEARNING TO LOVE (PART 3 OF 3)
PATH #6,$2.95, CROSSGEN COMICS
PATH VOL 1 TP CRISIS OF FAITH ,$19.95, CROSSGEN COMICS
POP GUN WAR #4,$2.50, ABSENCE OF INK COMIC PRESS
PUNISHER #15,$2.99, MARVEL COMICS (Yes, I know it's utterly simple-minded, but that's one of the levels where Garth Ennis works best. Over-the-top, tough-guy violence
RESIDENT EVIL CODE VERONICA VOL 1 TP,$14.95, DC COMICS
RUSE #11,$2.95, CROSSGEN COMICS
SAVAGE DRAGON ARCHIVES #1-4 SET,$8.95, IMAGE COMICS
SCION VOL 3 TP DIVIDED LOYALTIES,$15.95, CROSSGEN COMICS
SHIDIMA COLLECTED VOL 1 TP (PU#526),$9.95, DREAMWAVE
SHOT CALLERZ #3 (Of 4) (MR),$2.95, ONI PRESS INC.
SILENT MOBIUS PART 11 BLOOD #2 (Of 5),$2.95, VIZ
SLAYERS SPECIAL BOOK 1 TOUCH OF EVIL ,$15.95, CENTRAL PARK
SONIC THE HEDGEHOG #114,$1.99, ARCHIE COMIC PUBLICATIONS
SPECTRE #21,$2.75, DC COMICS
SPIDER-GIRL #51,$2.25, MARVEL COMICS
STUPID COMICS #1,$2.95, IMAGE COMICS
SUBWAY SERIES GN (MR),$9.95, ALTERNATIVE COMICS
SUPERMAN #186,$2.25, DC COMICS
TERRY MOORES PARADISE TOO #9 ,$2.95, ABSTRACT STUDIOS
THOR #54,$2.25, MARVEL COMICS (Let's see... does this make me something of a Marvel Zombie or is something interesting going on in this title? A bit of both, I'd say. I'm currently interested in seeing how far Thor takes this renewed stewardship of humanity role for the Norse gods.)
ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #26,$2.25, MARVEL COMICS (Call it a blind spot, or sheer pig-headed stubbornness, but I am so far not interested in anything with from Marvel with "Ultimate" in the title. They can claim whatever they like at Marvel's offices, but I smell "ultimate replacements" every time I look at these. If you enjoy them, though, then I'm happy for you.)
UNCANNY X-MEN #412",$2.25, MARVEL COMICS
VICTORIAN #15,$2.95, PENNY FARTHING PRESS (If I was a hair less lazy I'd check to see if I'd ordered this or not. I know I'd at least considered it. Any fans of the series out there?)
WARLANDS AGE OF ICE #7,$2.95, DREAMWAVE
WOLVERINE NETSUKE #1 (Of 4),$3.99, MARVEL COMICS
WORLD CLASS COMICS #1,$4.95, IMAGE COMICS
X-MEN ICONS CHAMBER #2 (Of 4),$2.99,MARVEL COMICS
YOUNG JUSTICE #49,$2.75,DC COMICS
ZENDRA VOL 2 #2 WINDMILLS OF THE WORLD (Of 6),$2.95, PENNY FARTHING PRESS
ZOMBIE COMMANDOS FROM HELL #2 (MR) $2.95, BONEYARD (It sounds interesting...)
Don't forget to swing by the messageboard even if it's just to tell me off for being ignorant! I'll give this feature an attempt for at least a few weeks - at least it'll be another reason for regular site updates. Let me know what you think. Otherwise, back to the Embassy with you!
