The dreaded cold has found me…
I have managed to evade the common cold for many, many months, but it has finally caught me. I feel like utter crap and I’m so worn out. Luckily, I had a reading week for my Russia class, so that means that I already had a very light load at uni this week. Of course, it got even lighter when I didn’t attend 2 out of the 3 of my other classes! I plead sickness and an inability to breathe while walking as my excuse. So basically all I’ve been doing this week is sleeping and remaining semi-comatose on the couch, coughing and struggling to breathe. It’s been a very pleasant experience. Hopefully, I’ll recover before Monday, so that I don’t miss any more classes.
I have actually been trying to get some work done during my torment as well. I had an essay that was due today, which I wrote two weeks ago (I know, how motivated of me!) and polished off last weekend. Now I have to turn my attention to another essay that is due on Monday, and which I have yet to start. Oops. Honestly, I don’t really care about this piece of work, as it’s only worth 10% of my grade (hardly even worth me trying). If this essay is anything like my essays from last term, then I’ll manage to write the 2,000 words sometime late Sunday night with no problems. It seems like the less work that I put into an essay, the better mark I get on it…I cannot explain the phenomenon, it’s just how it is…and it sometimes comes in very handy indeed!
Hmm, what else? Oh yes, several weeks ago I finally got all of my grades from last term. Overall, I’m very happy, and they were all above what I was expecting. For those curious people out there, the marks are as follows (the grades are out of 20):
GL 1004: The Nature of the Environment through Geological Time……15 (I was hoping for a bit higher of a grade, but I’ll settle for this one)
HI 1015: Vikings!.................................................................................16 (Brilliant! I only went to about 5 lectures, so I’m absolutely chuffed with this grade! Praise be to the last minute final exam cram session!)
HI 2010: The American Century……………………………………....17 (Very pleased with this grade…it is currently the highest grade that I’ve gotten at Aberdeen so far)
HI2011: Europe & Scotland, c1200-1500: Christendom in Crisis……..13 (I wasn’t too happy with this grade, but as the class was so boring and I barely learned anything, I suppose I should be happy I passed at all!)
Alright, well, as I’ve been busy concentrating on essay work for the last few weeks, I haven’t really been experiencing much of a social life, so I don’t really have much to write about this time. Oh yes, I would like to point out, however, that I will be flying back to Minnesota for my Easter break (March 27 thru April 12), and I’m really looking forward to getting together with some of my friends whom I haven’t seen in quite awhile. I’m also really looking forward to driving! I know this seems like an inane reason to want to visit the States, but I really miss just being able to hop in my car and go where and when I choose. You know, it’s funny…before I came to Scotland, I absolutely hated driving; if I could coerce someone else to drive, then I was happy. Now my viewpoint has changed and I’m so excited to get behind the wheel of my car!
I chose to fly back to the States during Easter and not during summer because I’m planning to visit my friend Theresa in Denmark this summer, and I’m trying to convince some of the guys to take a road trip to England (as I still haven’t been there yet!) as well, so I just wouldn’t have had the time. I’m also toying with the idea of getting a summer job, so that would also take up most of my time. Hopefully everything will work out as planned and I’ll have a fantastic first summer in Scotland. Stay tuned to see if that plan actually comes to fruition or not.
Before I go I would just like to send a quick shout-out to two of my friends who have recently become parents. I swear, everyone’s been having children lately…they’re all just breeding like rabbits!

Colin)
