Though this movie lacked any fear-instilling moments, it made up for it by creating a solid plot and unique, memorable characters that really captured the "Silent Hill" feeling. The movie will keep you interested, but don't count on jumping out of your seat.
The CGI effects were spot-on. The awkward, stumbling movement of the creatures of Silent Hill gives the movie that creepy feeling, but fails to reach frightening proportions. The creature designs were done well, and capture the true essence of the original Silent Hill.
With the greatness of Silent Hill comes drawbacks that could have only occurred in the movie. It's always difficult to convert a great video game into a great movie, and it was obvious that they struggled to convert Silent Hill. Of course you're not playing the video game, so anything that would have surprised and frightened you while walking through the game lost it's effect during the conversion over to the movie.
Besides the fact that this movie doesn't even remotely scare me, it was still a decent movie. The ending was one of the better movie conclusions that I have seen lately, and it made a great transition to go into Silent Hill 2, should the folks in Hollywood find it profitable enough to make a second one.
Scary movie? Only if you're eight years old.
