Mangalore

Mangalore derives the name from Mangala Devi, the presiding deity of the place. In the 7th century record it is mentioned as 'Mangalapura'. Mangala Devi Temple is located in the city. The African traveler, Ibnbatuta in 1342 A.D visited the place. It was in the possession of the Portuguese, the Ikkeri chiefs, Hyder Ali, and later the British. The Chinese, Arabs, Greeks and Europeans traded at this port, buying pepper, areca and other coastal products. The Portuguese first settled on the West Coast and in 1498 AD Vasco da Gama landed on the island near Udupi. Later in 1526 AD, the Portuguese took possession of Mangalore and became masters of trade in the coastal belt. After several destruction's of the town that followed, Mangalore came under the British, after the death of Tipu Sultan in the 4th Mysore War in 1799 AD The Catholic and Basel missionaries gave a modern look to Mangalore. Mangalore has two ports, old Mangalore port near the city and the new Mangalore Port at Panambur. Mangalore is an industrial town with several leading industries, business and banking houses.
