"I, Koushi Rikudou, do hereby give my
permission to Shinra to write a totally sweet review
of Excel Saga" ....

Heh... or something like that....

I discovered this BIZARRE anime around 5AM
one morning during exam week. I had been
writing papers for literally 18 hours and just needed
some mindless entertainment... Hahaha...
Excel Saga turned out to be the perfect cure.
Alright... so what is this series about? That's
actually a tad difficult to explain. In the realm of
Excel Saga, the concept of a true "story" is
secondary. A framework exists DOES exist:
Basically Excel and Hyatt are the sole members of
a top-secret organization known as ACROSS. The
group, led by the great Lord Ilpalazzo, hatches
dozens of schemes in an attempt to acquire
complete world domination... However, instead of
simply following this story out in a normal, coherent
fashion, the creator chooses to cast all of these
characters in off-the-wall parodies... One day it
could be a show dedicated entirely to sports (the
plan to take over world through exploitation of the
world's greatest game... bowling...)... while another
day it could be an action/drama show (the episode
attempting to parody "Rambo")...
With its crazy cast of characters, things rarely get
boring... Excel's rather stunning stupidity ussually
screws up ACROSS, Hyatt dies literally 3 or 4 times
per episode, revived continuously by "The Great
Will of the Macrocasm"... a flying galaxy with arms...
who also happens to be madly in love with Pedro, the
lost-soul of an immigrant worker... The staff, creator,
and producer (Nabeshin) appear repeatedly in the
series... cast as mysterious heroes saving the world
from destruction, while attempting to grab ratings at
the same time.
My sole problem with this series is that some of
the parodies have been PAINFULLY dull... namely the
ones revolving around Menchi and "social issues."
Other than those few exceptions, every episode
manages to deliver a considerable amount of
entertainment. If you want mindless comedy, then
here's my pick.
