| Course: 8th Grade Science Teacher: Mr. Cleveland | |||||||||
| Course Description: In science this year, students will develop and use the skills needed to investigate their world around them. Students will be studying important concepts in Physics and Ecology, paying particular attention to energy and its forms and purposes in each. Topics will include forces, motion, heat, light, sound, electricity, magnetism, and living and natural resources. | |||||||||
| Homework: Homework will be assigned and checked regularly. In accordance with student handbook policy, homework assignments should be recorded by the students in their school agendas. Missing a homework assignment will require the student to stay after school! Additionally, there is a 10% penalty per day late for all work. | |||||||||
| Classroom Rules and Consequences: Students must show respect to all members of the classroom at all times! This includes respecting each other, the items in the room, and the teacher by following directions, raising their hand to speak, coming to class on time, and coming prepared each day with a notebook, calculator, school agenda, and writing utensil. The first offense of a rule will lead to a warning. A second offense will require the student to stay after class and miss passing time. Parents may be contacted. A third offense requires the student to stay after school for detention on the following day. Parents will be contacted about the student's misbehavior. In the event of a fourth offense, the student will be asked to leave the class to go to the office and speak with Mrs. Hartigan in which case, parents will be contacted and both office and teacher detentions will be assigned. | |||||||||
| Absence: Absence from school will require students to make up missed work. This will be done in accordance with student handbook policy. Students are responsible for getting missed work, including class notes, which I encourage they do from their friends. | |||||||||
| Grading: Grading will be based on the number of points earned divided by the number of points available. For example, if a student earned a 95/100 on a test and 13/20 on a quiz, that student?s grade would be equal to 108/120 for a 90 average. Students will be required to record their own grades. In this manner, students and parents can at all times know their standing in the class, and no final grade should ever be a surprise! (Note: extra credit will count as points earned and not be included as points available, truly making it extra credit. For instance, if the student completed a 5 point extra credit assignment in the example above, the student's final grade would be 113/120 for a 94.) | |||||||||
| Classroom Procedures: Students should report immediately to their desks upon entry, clear their desks of everything but a notebook and a writing utensil, and work quietly on any assignment on the board. Students must sign out to go the bathroom and take a pass. A maximum of one boy and one girl is allowed out at a time. I encourage students to go at other times during the day but realize that emergencies do occur. Students should not interrupt me to go the bathroom! | |||||||||
| Mr. Cleveland's Science Homepage: I have developed a web page to go along with the course. Information available on the site includes: a course syllabus, homework assignments, enrichment opportunities, what we did in class that day, tips to succeed in science, links to science sites, and a link to my e-mail address. This site is for parents and students alike and comes in handy in the advent of an absence from school. I encourage parents and students to e-mail me as necessary. I will do my best to keep the site updated and answer e-mails efficiently. Enjoy Mr. Cleveland's Science Homepage by going to www.geocities.com/mrcleve My e-mail address is [email protected] | |||||||||
