Chapter 6 – Don’t Sound So Bummed!

“I love this movie!” Emily said while blowing her nose and wiping away the tears from her eyes.

“Shh! Don’t spoil it! There’s still 5 minutes left!” I said.

This happened to be one of my favorite movies of all time. When my favorite part of the movie came up, I mouthed the lines to Paul:

Love is always patient and kind

It is never jealous

Love is never boastful nor conceited

It is never rude nor selfish

It does not take offense

It is not resentful

Love takes no pleasure in other peoples sins

But delights in the truth

Its is always ready to excuse, to trust, to hope and to endure whatever comes

No one noticed that I was doing it, but Paul did; and that was all that mattered. By this time, Emily had already broken out the Kleenex and was starting to fill the garbage cans with dirty tissues. Benji held her close as she sobbed because of the ultra-high dramatic ending.

At the end of the movie, Emily ran to the bathroom to clean herself up. This gave Paul the perfect opportunity to grab the seat next to me. He put his arm around me and I put my head on his shoulder as he kissed my forehead.

“I saw you mouth that,” Paul said to me.

“Good. You were supposed to.” I laughed while saying that. Paul stopped my by kissing me.

“Ewe!” Benji said

“Oh hush up child. Seeing you and Emily go at it is far worse than this!”

“Heh, yeah, I guess so.”

All this loving must have made Joel uncomfortable; he stood up and walked to the front of the bus.

“Oh well.” Billy continued, “That boy hasn’t had a girlfriend since God knows when. We need to find him someone soon.”

“Yeah, we defiantly should.”

It was pretty late, and there were only a few more hours left on this ride to Seattle, so we decided to hit the sack.

“So Emily and Benj are bunking together, so are Ayla and Billy.”

“Uh huh, are your point is?”

“I think we should too.” Paul laughed.

I looked over his shoulder and saw Joel sitting on the couch miserable. “Nah, I think we should take separate bunks. It might make Joel feel uncomfortable, you know?”

“Yeah, ok then. Goodnight. I love you”

“I love you too!” I gave Paul a peck on the cheek and then walked to the couch, where my luggage was. “So Joel, what eating at you?”

“Oh nothing, I’m just, well, lonely” He replied.

“Aww, I have to find you someone by the time I leave.”

“No, it’s cool. I’ll find someone.”

“You better!”

“Giving out orders, eh?”

“Hehe, yeah.”

Joel stood up and gave me a hug and a kiss on the cheek. “Thank you” he whispered in my ear.

“For what?” I asked.

“Caring. Thinking about me. No one ever does around here.”

“Anytime! That’s what friends are for!”

The next morning we arrived at the hotel in Seattle. Ayla and Billy had gotten themselves in a peculiar position on the couch, while Benj and Emily were already up showering before anyone. I picked up my pair of black UFO’s and my orange and blue baseball tee and fixed my hair into something that resembled a bun. I opened the curtain to Paul’s bunk but he was missing. I walked outside to find him lighting up a cigarette.

“Hey, can I get a drag?” I asked him.

“Sure. I didn’t know you smoked.” He handed me the lit cigarette.

“I don’t.” I threw the cigarette on the ground.

“Hey!”

“Hey yourself. That’s disgusting. Plus, the smoke makes my throat close.”

“Oh, I’m sorry” Paul apologized.

“Meh. So what do you have planned for today?”

“Promotions and what not.”

“Can I come?” I asked.

“I’m sorry, but no. Hey, you could get to know Emily, since Benji wont be around her.”

“Yeah, that’s true.”

I went to go in and kiss Paul when a certain someone interrupted us.

“Paul and Hailey sitting in a tree...K-IS-S-I-N-G”

“BENJI!” Paul screamed.

“Oh lover boy!” Emily shouted. Benji went running to her like a hungry puppy during Thanksgiving Dinner. She jumped on him, allowing him to hug and kiss the living shit out of her (no, I didn’t mean that literally).

“But Paul, I don’t want to spend the day with Emily. I want to spend it with you” I put my arms around his neck. “Please?”

“Ok ok, I’ll see what I can do.”

“YAY!”

Paul pulled some strings and got me up to the station. I couldn’t actually go into the room with him, but I was allowed to wait up there to watch to the show.  They were recording it and having it air on another date, so I had no way of hearing it. Watching the show with no sound, seeing them talk and laugh and make movements was entertaining enough for me.

Paul walked out of the room and gave me a hug.

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing, we’re breaking for lunch.”

“Oh, I didn’t know you could do that” I laughed.

“Oh yea. We’re hot shot rock stars, we can do whatever we want.”

“I laughed as he put his arm around me. Benji and Billy filed out of the room. I noticed Joel still in the room with the interviewer.

“Hmm…maybe he found someone he likes.”

“Yeah, you should have seen them Hailey. They were all flirty during the interviews. It was sick!”

“Of course it was sick Benj! It’s your brother.”

“No, the flirting wasn’t a problem, but someone actually interested in Joel?”

“Way to boost up my self esteem Benj,” Joel said while walking out of the room with the interviewer. “Hey guys, you know Maddie. She’s gonna come with us to get food.”

“Hey Maddie!” I said.

“Don’t sound so bummed Hailey.” Paul whispered in my ear.

“Don’t worry, I wont!” I whispered back.

We arrived at a little diner and grabbed a table.

“Where’s Ayla and Emily?” Billy asked.

“Oh you know, the usual girl stuff…shopping”

“So why aren’t you with them Hailey?” Benji said

“I hate shopping.”

Benji gasped. “A female who hates shopping?? I thought that was impossible.”

“Heh yeah, I can do the impossible.”

I wasn’t very hungry so I didn’t order much. But I was amazed at how much Billy, Paul, Benji and Joel could. Lunch was nice. It was great meeting Maddie. Her and Joel seemed to be hitting it off nice.

Paul and I walked out holding hands and headed to the van that would take us back to the radio station.
