MISSION SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO
INTRODUCTION
Actually there are 21 Missions in California, one of them is Mission San Juan Capistrano; it is the seventh one that was named in honor of St. John of Capistran, a 15th century religious scholar.
Mission San Juan Capistrano is located 70 miles North of San Diego, less then three miles from the Pacific Ocean. This location was chosen, because near there, are historic buildings, museum period rooms, Gardens and The Serra Chapel. (ACTUALLY ALL OF THOSE WERE ADDED LATER BECAUSE OF THE MISSION AND THE LONG HISTORY THERE) Mission San Juan Capistrano was founded in California, between 1769 and 1823.
Mission San Juan Capistrano is known as a church place were Indians lived. Father Junipero Serra named it. Some things that happened in Mission San Juan Capistrano, was when they were done building it. An earthquake destroyed the mission; and they had to build it again. The priests and the mission were able to survive, because they went outside the mission, and the Indians who lived there did it too.
The Mexican government sold the seventh mission, San Juan Capistrano. They sold the Mission in 1845 for $710.00 and the Indians didn't have any place to go.
The Mission San Juan Capistrano has this name, because St. John Capistran took the name of his Italian birthplace.
The Indian tribes who lived there before were the Acagchemem tribes. They were peaceful and lived in small villages.
The
seventh mission was called San Juan Capistrano, and was founded by Father
Junipero Serra. He built all the 21
missions.
Mission San Juan Capistrano,
was built with stones, cement 4 bells and one tower. It was made with bricks
and adobe and it has different plants around it.
In Mission San Juan
Capistrano they planted food, crops, orchard, vineyards, oranges, waltnuts,
barley, olives, trees and flowers. That all the things they planted.
Today a lot of people enjoy the concerts, festivals, and exhibits are held at the mission throughout the year. Also they make a weeklong fiesta greets these swallows who stay in San Juan Capistrano until about October 23. Actually the Mission looks like a church and a house where the people can go to visit it. Many white birds are flying around it.
