| Wreck kills driver, injures passenger Sunday, February 06, 2005 By PRECIOUS PETTY The Express-Times L. MT. BETHEL TWP. -- A 22-year-old Easton man died early Saturday after a single-vehicle crash on Martins Creek-Belvidere Highway, just west of Depues Ferry Road, state police said. Driver Joseph Holinko was flown by medical helicopter to St. Luke's Hospital in Fountain Hill, where he was pronounced dead from injuries sustained in the wreck, police said. Passenger Daniel Gearhart, 21, of Bangor, was treated for minor injuries at the crash, police said. Police said Holinko was headed west on Martins Creek-Belvidere Highway in a 1992 Ford Ranger about 12:15 a.m. when he lost control of the truck around a sharp left curve. He was traveling "at a speed too fast for a left turn in the roadway," police said. The truck hit a telephone pole, continued northwest then struck a cement bridge abutment, police said. The second impact sent the vehicle spinning counterclockwise and dislodged the truck cab from its frame, police said. Blue Valley Rescue Squad, Lower Mount Bethel Fire Department and PennStar assisted state police at the crash. A native of Denville, N.J., Holinko lived most of his life in Hope, N.J. Holinko was a 2001 graduate of Belvidere High School where he wrestled and played baseball. He was a welder for Stateline Fabrications in Phillipsburg. Attempts to contact the family Saturday evening were unsuccessful. Reporter Precious Petty can be reached at 610-867-5000 or by e-mail at [email protected]. |
