I have some very sad news. The male grizzly bear "Growly" has passed away. He was well over 30 years old. He had been at the zoo for 24 years. He was a "trouble" bear in a national park before finding his way to Canada to be a research bear. (Poor guy) He had severe arthritis and a degenerative joint disorder. The vets decided they couldn't help him, even his meds weren't helping anymore. He always looked sad, he's in a great place now, without pain. He will be missed by many, especially his lady bear "Ginger". She is in her 20's. They had 3 cubs that were sent off to other zoos. She's doing really well by herself so her zookeeper says there are no plans to bring in another grizzly.

This was Growly resting in one of his favorite spots. You can see one of his scars, he had them all over his body. Maybe they were from fights he was in when he was wild or from being a poor research bear.
These are Ginger.
This is Ginger standing next to a sleeping Growly. She almost seemed to be "keeping guard". I think they really loved each other.
You can see here that they were really close, very unusual for a male and female.
If you visit the zoo, keepers ask that you don't call Ginger by name. They like to be the only people that call her by name to keep a special bond.

Ginger.......
It's sad that she's alone now, but at least she's doing well. She always has her neighbours the black bears to talk to.
