Carnegie Learning Algebra 1 will be presented as a technology-enhanced algebra class using Carnegie Learning's Algebra 1 curriculum with the computer-based Cognitive Tutor®. The computer-based Cognitive Tutor® both reinforces skills learned in the classroom and introduces new skills as students progress at a pace suitable to each individual. |
|
In Carnegie Learning Algebra 1 you will spend about 60% of your class time doing the classroom activities and about 40% working at the computer. That means in a typical five-day week, 3 days will be spent in the classroom exploring realistic problems both in small groups and individually, receiving instruction, completing assignments, making presentations, and doing assessments. The other two days will be spent in the computer lab. The Cognitive Tutor® presents you with realistic problems involving algebra skills. It uses artificial intelligence to track your progress and provide context-sensitive help when you appear to be confused as well as immediate feedback. As you display mastery of the current skill, the Cognitive Tutor® will advance you to the next skill level or concept.

The course is much different from a traditional algebra 1 program. You will work mostly on real-world applications of algebra skills. New skills will be learned as they are needed to solve problems.
The teacher's role in the Carnegie Learning curriculum is quite different also. Rather than presenting content in the more traditional style, most of the time the teacher acts as a facilitator to your learning, answering questions and providing guidance to help you acquire skills as needed to solve realistic scenarios.
