Reading strategies to use when you don't know a word:

1. Sound it out.
2. Chunk the word into small parts.
3. Read the rest of the sentence then go back to the word.
4. Go back and re-read the start of the sentence.
5. Look the work up in a dictionary or use dictionary.com.
6. Ask a parent or another person what the word means.
