MRADE AWARDS CRITERIA

MRADE recognizes excellence through three awards annually:

Outstanding Developmental Education Program

Outstanding Developmental Educator

Outstanding Developmental Education Student

Nominations are due by June 1 to the Awards Chair. The Chair will convene a panel of four MRADE members representative of the various states within the Midwest Region to review the nominations. The panel may elect to approve only one award or no award in any category. Awards will be presented at the annual fall MRADE Conference. Following are the criteria for the three Awards:

 

Outstanding Developmental Education Program Plaque

The Outstanding Developmental Education Program Award recognizes a developmental program that exemplifies the best of current practices in the field. Nomination packets are limited to 20 pages and should include:

1. Letter(s) of nomination

2. Letter of support from the campus administrator.

3. Description of the program highlighting unique features and evidence of success with developmental students.

4. Copies of program brochures, flyers, and other publicity materials.

Submit 4 copies of the nomination packet to go to the four members of the review panel.

Outstanding Developmental Educator Plaque

The Outstanding Developmental Educator Award recognizes a member of both MRADE and NADE whose work on behalf of developmental students exemplifies the developmental education philosophy. Nominations are limited to 10 pages and should include:

1. Letter of nomination including identification of student populations the nominee served or is serving.

2. Letter of endorsement from the campus administrator.

3. Resume of nominee

4. Supporting material, such as letters from students, articles about or by the nominee, and clippings or other information detailing impact upon developmental students.

All materials included in the nomination packet must be able to be faxed.

Outstanding Developmental Education Student Plaque + $150

The Outstanding Developmental Education Student Award honors developmental student achievement. The person selected for this award will be the MRADE representative in the Martha Maxwell Developmental Education Student Scholarship Award. To be considered, the nominee

a. Must have completed at least two developmental courses or participated in at least two of the following developmental program activities: TRIO Upward Bound, TRIO Student Support Services, High School-to-College Bridge Program, special admissions program, enrollment in developmental classes (e.g., math, writing, study skills, reading).

b. Must have at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average (based on 4.0 grade scale).

c. Must plan to enroll in or continue enrollment in a postsecondary educational institution during the next academic year.

Nomination packets are limited to 5 pages and should include:

1. A 500-word autobiographical typewritten, double-spaced essay on the theme "How My Involvement in Developmental Education Has Helped Me Prepare for Regular College Courses." Other information in the essay might include educational background, goals and aspirations, leadership skills, creative abilities, and any other facts about the applicant that the person would like to include.

2. Copy of most recent college transcript.

3. Letter of recommendation from the sponsoring MRADE chapter member (limit of 1 page).

4. Summary describing the applicant’s involvement in developmental education activities, extracurricular activities, honors and awards received, and involvement in the community (limit of 1 page).

MRADE Student Award = $150 Martha Maxwell NADE Award = $500.

Deadlines: MRADE – June 1 NADE – December 15

All conference expenses need to be paid by the student. However, the student’s sponsoring institution might consider supporting some or all of the expenses. MRADE will provide a conference fee waiver for the student winner.

All materials included in the nomination packet must be able to be faxed.
