Additional Practice Problems
1)  What is the significance of an absolute temperature scale?

2)  Why do the gases of the Earth's atmosphere not escape into the vacuum of outer space?

3)Two hot-air balloon envelopes are being inflated on a field.  The envelope of balloon A is 1.25
times the volume of the envelope of balloon B.  At the same temperature and pressure,
which balloon will contain the larger mass of air after they are both inflated to 75% of
    their capacity?

4)  A balloon has a volume of 1.75 L at a temperature of 25 degrees Celsius.  What will be
the volume of the balloon if you take it out into the winter cold air at -15 degrees celsius?

5)  A gas mixture contains hydrogen, helium, neon, and argon.  The total pressure of the
mixture is 93.6 kPa.  The partial pressures of helium, neon, and argon are 15.4 kPa,
25.7 kPa, and 35.6 kPa, respectively.  What is the pressure exerted by hydrogen?

6)  What is the volume of a 24.7 mol gas sample that exerts a pressure of 0.999 atm at a
     temperature of 305 K?

7)  To what temperature would you have to heat a 1.90 mol sample of gas at 1.05 atm
pressure to get its volume up to 50.0 L ?

8)  What is the  volume in liters of a sample of 100.0g of oxygen gas at 298 K and a
     pressure of 3.33 atm?

9)  A weather balloon at launch is partially inflated with 3.00 x 10^4 L of helium at STP.
What will be teh volume of helium at an altitude of 7 km, where the pressure is 0.41 atm
and the temperature is -20 degrees celsius?

10)  How many nitrogen molecules are contained in 1.00 L of nitrogen gas at 1.00 atm and
298 K?  How many nitrogen atoms?

11)  If a round balloon has a radius of 10.0 cm at 273 K, what will the radius be at 373 K?

12)  A bicycle tire is inflated to a pressure of 60 pounds per square inch at 12 degrees celsius.
What is the pressure in the tire if the tire gets heated to 32 degrees celsius?  You can
assume that the volume of the tire does not change.
