Prerequisite:

Successful completion of Pre-Algebra in the 7th grade or a failure to complete Algebra 1 in the 8th grade.

 

Purpose:        

This course is designed to provide you with a foundation in the concepts of

Algebra 1, and prepare you for Geometry and Algebra 2.

 

Required Text:

McDougal Littell:  Algebra 1           

 

If there is any damage to your assigned book, you will be responsible for either its

repair or its replacement.

                       

Supplies:

·        Notebook (must have pockets on either side and must hold paper in the center)

·        Scientific Calculator

·        Ruler

·        Graph Paper

·        Pencils ( For Tests, Quizzes and Homework)

·        Paper

·        Pens (optional)

 

Topics Covered:

            Chapter 1:            Connections to Algebra           

            Chapter 2:            Properties of real numbers

            Chapter 3:       Solving linear equations

            Chapter 4:            Graphing linear equations and functions

            Chapter 5:       Writing linear equations

            Chapter 6:       Solving and graphing linear equations

            Chapter 7:            Systems of linear equations and inequalities

            Chapter 8:            Exponents and exponential functions

            Chapter 9:            Quadratic equations and functions

            Chapter 10:            Polynomials and factoring

            Chapter 11:            Rational equations and functions

            Chapter 12:            Radicals and connections to geometry

 

·        This course will cover roughly 3 chapters a quarter.

Assessments:

            Tests

·        We will have 3 tests every quarter.  At the completion of every chapter, there will be a test.  The tests will be worth 100 points each.

Quizzes

·        We will have a quiz twice a week.  The quizzes will more than likely be on Tues. and Thurs. unless otherwise notified.  The quizzes will vary from 20 to 50 points each.

Notebook

·        Your notebook will be collected and graded the day of the tests.  The notebook will be worth 50 points each.

Projects

·        There will be projects that vary from 50 to 200 points each.

 

Homework Policy:

Homework will be assigned almost everyday.  The homework assignments will be worth 5 points each.  There will be no homework assigned on any of the following days:

1.    the day before a chapter test

2.    on computer lab day

3.    the days before Christmas and Spring break

4.    the last day of school

 

Classroom Rules:

  1. If I am speaking, no one should be talking.
  2. If a student is asking a question, no one should be talking.
  3. If either I or a student is speaking, you are not to get out of your seat for any reason.
  4. Gum is allowed in this class.  All wrappers and used gum must be placed in the garbage can.
  5. Respect every person in the class

 

Tardy Policy:

            For every 3 unexcused tardies to my class, you will receive an 8th bell.

 

Restroom policy:

            You have one free restroom pass a year.  If you have to go after that, you must

            write a lesson, out of the book, when you return.  You will not be able to go to

            the restroom again until the lesson is written.

 

Grading:

            A (100% - 93%)

            B (92% - 85%)

            C (84% - 74%)

            D (73% - 70%)

            F (69% or less)
