Final Assignment:
Earth’s Crust
For
your final assignment you will have a variety of options to choose from. You will need to show your understanding of unit
concepts in one of the following ways:
1) Build a model of a mine (open pit,
underground, or strip mine). Label the
important parts of the mine. Include a
write up that describes how each part of the mine works.
2) Build a model of a farmer’s field that
reduces or eliminates erosion. Label the
important features and describe in a write up how they help reduce erosion.
3) Build a model of a tailings pond. Include a write up that describe the features
that make the tailings pond environmentally safe.
4) Find at least 5 examples of weathering around
your home or town. Be sure to include
examples of mechanical, biological, and chemical weathering. Take pictures or sketch the objects. Include a write up that describes how the
weathering occurred.
5) Create a rock collection that includes at
least 7 different types of rocks. In a
write up, identify each rock and explain how it was formed. Classify each rock as sedimentary, igneous, or
metamorphic.
6) Research an environmental issue related to a
topic studied in this unit. Examples include
environmental concerns about mining, chemical weathering due to acid rain, etc. Submit a two page summary of the issue.
7) Build a model of the earth’s surface that
shows where continental plates are located.
On your model, indicate the direction of movement of each plate. In a write up, describe how plate tectonics
shape the land, and identify 3 fault lines where earthquakes frequently occur.
8) Create your own assignment based on a topic
that interests you. You could choose to
do a presentation to the class, a poster, an information pamphlet, a model, or
a research paper. Discuss your idea with
me for approval before beginning.
Projects will be
due on Friday, January 25. Be ready to
discuss your ideas with me by Monday, January 14!
