ST165 Starter Modification
If you are having intermittent starter problems it could be several things, but for All-tracs a common cause is a build up or resistance in the power wire to the starter.  This is generally caused by the heat of the engine, corrosion, and the age of the wire.

A simple test to confirm if this is the problem is to disconnect the power wire to the starter and put a multi-meter inbetween to measure the amperage.  When someone tries to start the car you should see how much power is getting to the starter.   If it is less than 12.8 volts this maybe the problem.  It could also be a low battery so check to make sure your battery is fully charged.

I have done this on my car, and this is my best recollection on how to do this properly.  However, like any modification you should confirm all of the information with credible sources and take proper safety steps when working on your car..  I take no responsibility for any damage done to your vehicle, by doing this modification.
The fix for this problem is simply to add a relay.  Any automotive relay should be sufficient.

A relay is really just a big switch that responds whenever another smaller switch is turned off or on.

Place your mouse over the picture to see the relay turn on.
On the relay somewhere you should see a drawing similar to this one.  Some may have an extra position usually labeled at 87a.  For this modification you can ignore this position and leave this post unwired.

You will need to add a ground wire and a large gauge (10-12) run directly from the battery.  I recommend adding an inline fuse on the battery wire to the relay as well.

There are additional modifications that can be done with this, like the starter button mod and several others.  However, this is purely a start fix to ensure that you have good power to the starter when trying to start the car.

30. Wire the inline fuse and direct battery power to this location.

85. If you simply cut the old power wire to the start, connect the ignition or key side of the wire to this location

86.  The ground wire you added, should be connected here, this should be an appropriate sized wire for the power coming from the ignition system.

87. If you simply cut the old power wire to the starter, connect the starter side of the wire to this location.
