Fife High School

Geometry

Course Syllabus 2001-2002

Teacher:         Kirk Dodge

Room:             423

Text:               Geometry, “Tools for a Changing World” published by Prentice Hall Math.

Course content:

In this course students will gain skill in drawing, visualization, and following algorithms.  Students will also develop an understanding in transformations, angle theory, polygons, and triangle congruence are subjects of proof.  Measurement formulas, three-dimensional figures, surface area, and volumes are also studied.

This course is designed to provide a comprehensive overview of the mathematical field of geometry.  Students that are successful in this course will gain the analytical skills and factual knowledge necessary to deal critically in a geometrical world.

Homework:

Geometry is a demanding course requiring homework every night, and often on the weekends.  Each chapter that is assigned must be read, terms and formulas identified, quizzes taken and the chapter test passed.  We will cover approximately 10 chapters by June.  Students desiring a grade of  “A” or “B” will need to spend a minimum of 4-5 hours a week on assignments and studying for tests.  All homework and exams must be done in pencil.

Unit assignments:

Each unit will consist of a term/formula sheet, daily quizzes and a unit exam.  A calendar with due dates and the unit exam date will be posted prior to the beginning of each unit. Assignments that are not turned in on time will be deducted 50%.

Assignment weights:

            Terms/formulas sheet       =10%

            Quizzes                           =10%

            Daily homework              =20%

            Unit Exams                      =60%

A comprehensive final exam will count as two unit Exams.

Math notebook:

The math notebook will consist of three sections: the first section will be for notes given during class, the second section will be for unit terms, and the third section will be for mathematical formulas.  The notebook will be graded on completeness, organization, and content.

Grading scale:

                        A         100% to 90%

                        B          89% to 80%

                        C         79% to 70%

                        D         69% to 60%

                        F          Below 60%

Attendance requirements:

A student’s attendance has been identified by parents, students, faculty, staff, and administration of Fife High School as a basis for grading.  The final semester grade for students with seven (7) or fewer absences will not be altered.  Students will have one percentage (1%) point deducted from their final grade for each absence greater than seven (7).   A student with more than 12 absences in one semester will be denied credit for the course.  The student may remain in class for the opportunity to learn.
