Course content:
In this course students will gain skills necessary for further
study in mathematics or science. They will build skills in problem
solving, and to assist in the preparation for state tests.
Students will learn how to solve for unknown values and variables,
how to manipulate expressions and equations, develop solve and graph first
degree equations. Probability and statistics are also introduced.
Students will also be exposed to second-degree equations, their graphs,
and the quadratic formula.
This course is designed to provide a comprehensive overview of
the mathematical field of algebra. Students that are successful in
this course will gain the analytical skills and knowledge necessary to
deal critically in an algebraic world.
Homework:
Algebra is a demanding course requiring homework everynight,
and often on the weekends. Each chapter that is assigned must be
read, terms and formulas identified, quizzes taken and the chapter test
passed. We will cover approximately the first six chapters by December.
Students desiring a grade of "A" or "B" will need to spend a minimum
of 4-5 hours a week on assignments and studying for tests. All homework
and exams must be done in pencil.
Unit assignments:
Each unit will consist of a term/formula sheet, daily quizzes
and a unit exam. A calendar with due dates and the unit exam date
will be posted prior to the beginning of each unit. Assignments that are
not turned in on time will be deducted 50%. No late assignments will
be accepted from a previous chapter.
Assignment weights:
| Terms/formulas sheet | 10% |
| Quizzes | 10% |
| Daily homework | 10% |
| Unit test | 70% |
Math notebook:
The math notebook will consist of three sections: the first section
will be for notes given during class, the second section will be for unit
terms, and the third section will be for mathematical formulas. The
notebook will be graded on completeness, organization, and content.
Grading scale:
| A | 100% to 90% |
| B | 89% to 80% |
| C | 79% to 70% |
| D | 69% to 60% |
| F | Below 60% |
Attendance requirements:
A student’s attendance has been identified by parents, students,
faculty, staff, and administration of Fife High School as a basis for grading.
The final semester grade for students with seven (7) or fewer absences
will not be altered. Students will have one percentage (1%) point
deducted from their final grade for each absence greater than seven (7).
A student with more than 12 absences in one semester will be denied credit
for the course. The student may remain in class for the opportunity
to learn.
Classroom rules:
Expectations
1. Be on time
2. Bring all materials
to class everyday (book, pencil, paper, and journal)
3. Complete all assignments
4. Be respectful of yourself
and others
Consequences
1. Spoken to quietly in
the classroom
2. Spoken to not so quietly
outside the classroom
3. Contact with parents
4. Administrative intervention
