The project : Students write a collaborative story to share with students around the world via email.
How to do it : Individually, have students prepare the PLAN of their story.
Choice of style for the story ( suspense, drama, romantic, funny…)
Choice of characters : physical description, psychological profile….
Setting : location, point in time, feeling of the place and time.
Sudden event : something happens…but what???? For you to decide!
Have students appeal to the reader’sSENSES (sights you can see, odors you can smell, things you can feel in you hands, sounds you can hear, dishes you can taste).
Detailled description is the key-word here.
Students should write about one page as a first draft. THEN
Divide the class in teams of three or four, depending on the number of students you have.
Students hand their first draft to either side partner. They read the story and continue it
on the disturbant event that ends the first draft.
Students collaborate on their partner's story
(for a quarter to half a page, always ending in suspense…).
You might also want to allow a certain period of time instead.
Ask students to sign or initial their parts.
Ask them to switch stories until all the first drafts are back in their first author’s hands.
Still in teams, the students read the story aloud (just for their team) and vote
on one team story.
After this is done, you have a representitive from
each team read their story aloud to the class.
The class must then vote
to select THE class story.
Students should not be allowed to vote for their own team.
Then, the real fun begins!
Submit your story for other students to work on.
Read other students' stories and add to them.
Participate as often as you wish.
Teachers could also decide to run a multi year project that would lead to a real story (that could even be published).
