The sketch

Objectives:
*Students will write the scenario of a sketch
*Students will play the sketch
*Students will auto-evaluate themselves
*Students will send a taped copy of their sketch to their partner class
*Students will learn about current events in different countries of the world
*This year's topic: a t.v. newscast

How to:
*In a popcorn session (brainstorming), ask the students to enumerate the different parts that make a good and complete newscast.
List on board. They should find: local, national and international news, financial news, lottery, sports, weather and more.

*Explain the similarities and differences between the anchor person and the reporters.

*Students form teams of two to four partners and determine their respective roles.

*Students decide on the content of their newscast (they should include enough material so that every student gets to speak for one to two minutes).

*Students write the plan of their sketch by selecting the news they will be covering. "Today's top stories are..."

*At this point, students might decide if their news bulletin will be serious or seriously funny.

*As a homework, students should gather real information on the news they intend to present.

*Students write the detailed script and scenario of their sketch.

*Students then proofread their partner's work and make corrections

*Upon approval from the teacher, students are now ready to learn their text and play it for the camera.

*Many students will want to complete this project at home with their own camera. I think it gives them more liberty and time to do a good job so I think it's a good idea.

*For those who don't have a video camera, they will do it in class with a camera provided by the school.

*Once all the tapes are in, plan a viewing session for students to auto-evaluate their performances.

*Suggested evaluation criteria:
Vocabulary (varied, no bad language, etc.)-------5 points
Grammar (accurate)-------------------------------5 points
Originality (ideas, props, etc.)-----------------5 points
Respect of deadlines (maximum two weeks)---------5 points
Global effort and seriousnous--------------------5 points
Total for the oral part----------------------25 points

*Once all this is done, the only thing left to do is to send a copy to your partner class and wait for a copy from them!

*Don't forget to bringto class for the viewing of your partner's tape!!!
