The Battle of New Orleans 2005

(by Mark H. Henshaw - with apologies to Jimmy Driftwood)

Well, in two-oh-oh-five we took a little trip

With First Lieutenant Bush along the mighty Mississip

We took a little water and we took some MREs

To the thirsty, starvin people in the town of New Orleans

We dropped our sandbags but the water kept a-risin

The pumps weren't running, there were 'gators in the streets

The levees couldn't hold and the Superdome was leakin

'Twas a shame to see the ruin brought by Hurricane Katrin.

I seen Harry Connick, he was walkin down the street.

And talkin to some looters that was stealin' stuff to eat

They complained about the government,

As, mournin for the dead,

They shared a looted bottle of Johnny Walker Red.

The weatherman said trina was weaker than Camille

Many people did not take the risk to life and limb for real.

The poor folks of New Orleans really never had a chance

They shuffled to the Superdome to watch the raindrops dance.

We dropped more sandbags but the water kept a-risin

The pumps weren't running, there were gators in the streets

The levees couldn't hold and the Superdome was leakin

Twas a shame to see the ruin brought by Hurricane Katrin.

Meanwhile, out in Gulfport the storm surge came and went

There was little left a-standin, what was all broke and bent

Fishin boats blocked all the streets, the power lines were down

It was dark, and hot, and wet, and still all over Gulfport-town.

Oh, we'll pay at the pump

And we'll pay again at tax-time

Lord, the price of heating oil! -the price of gasoline!

When it's all totaled-up

It won't amount to nothin

Like the sufferin of the people of the town of New Orleans.

The Guvner says she's tired and she hasn't had much sleep,

The water on old Bourbon Street is standin mighty deep,

They're bussin folks to Houston and the levees still are down,

There seems to be no copin when such troubles come around.

We dropped more sandbags but the water kept a-risin

The pumps weren't running, there were gators in the streets

The levees couldn't hold and the Superdome was leakin

Twas a shame to see the ruin brought by Hurricane Katrin.

The gators and the cottonmouths were found all over town,

Nobody knows how many folks were swept-away or drowned.

FEMA and the ARC are doin what they can

But twas way too little, way too late things just got out-of-hand.

Oh, well pay at the pump

And we'll pay again at tax-time

Lord, the price of heating oil! -the price of gasoline!

When it's all totaled-up

It won't amount to nothin

Like the sufferin of the people of the town of New Orleans.

We dropped more sandbags but the water kept a-risin

The pumps weren't running, there were gators in the streets

The levees couldn't hold and the Superdome was leakin

Twas a shame to see the ruin brought by Hurricane Katrin.
