| When the men of the Marquette Male Chorus gather together, we frequently start rehearsals with warm-up and then join our voices together in praise of song. This was the intent of founding the Marquette Male Chorus in the 1981-82 season in collaboration between Ellen Clement and men interested in singing. As director of music at Marquette Senior High School, Clement had been to a performance by the Negaunee Male Chorus (the oldest chorus in the district). She knew that several members of the Negaunee chorus were from Marquette. She also wanted a venue in which the young male voices from her school choirs could continue. With help from Roger Whistler, the Marquette Male Chorus was formed.
Clement already had achieved recognition throughout the state as an outstanding director for her work with school choirs. The Redman Chorale Men's Ensemble won the State Ensemble Championship in 1980-81. The following year she was selected to be director for the state TTBB Honors choir. So, the MMC prospered musically and with recognition throughout the area. Clement retired in 2000 and handed over the direction to others. Change however, has brought yet a new and exciting challenge to the Marquette Male chorus. The group is now under the direction of Mr. Wayne Hanmer. Mr. Hanmer is far from being a novice with music, voice, and choral direction. Some of you might remember the International Male Chorus Big Sing held in Marquette several years ago. Mr. Hanmer was an adjudicator for that event. Therefore, he has a strong background in Male chorus structure and is a valuable asset to our small group. |
