Manson list his 10 heroes
ANTON LAVEY
Now-deceased founder of the church of Satan.
Manson: "LaVey was a great friend who taught me a lot and who gave me courage to be what I am today. I suppose he was the changing of the guard when Aleister Crowley left and now I hope to carry on the same tradition of challenging mainstream religious. Did he direct my career in any way? It's possible, but you can never try and guess what would have happened if you had picked a different path, meeting him though and the encouragement he offered definitely helped me to get where I am now."
ALEJANDRO JADOROWSKY
Art-house film-maker.
Manson: "After seeing such films as 'Holy Mountain' and 'EI Topo' he gave me the encouragement to have a greater imagination when it came to making videos and not being afraid to think of things that normally your consciousness would try and leave out. He, to me, is one of the greatest film makers and his films and friendship have made the greatest impact on my art and my life."
ALEISTER CROWLEY
Philosopher and Satanist, once dubbed 'the world's most evil man'.
Manson: "I think he represented everything that was great about being evil - I think that sums him up. He was a fellow beast that has inspired me to carry a torch that he lit a long time ago."
WILLY WONKA
Roald Dahl's magical sweet manufacturer - an adult with a child's heart.
Manson: "It's a character that I've always identified with and who I paid tribute to on 'Portrait Of An American Family' by re-creating the boat ride scene as an intro to the album. If I could be any one other character I would love to be Willy Wonka, even if it was just so that I could just see up Veruca Salt's skirt. He's the most enigmatic character in a children's film. He was both Christ and Satan."
OSCAR WILDE
Irish-born dandy, socialite, writer and all-round wit.
Manson: "He's got the sharpest, most bitter wit of anyone that I've ever read and I think I have a similar dry sense of humour. He knew hot to push the envelope and he was damn funny too - I've always been inspired by his writing, paericularly on the last album. Do I have any particular favourite work? No, I like his little aphorisms, his little one-liners."
JOHN LENNON
Late Beatles leader who famously claimed they were bigger than Jesus"
Manson: "Despite the fact that we have a lot of dissimilarities I find a lot in common with John Lennon as far as some of the imagery that comes to mind. The significance and role that he played and how he affected everything in music makes him a hero in my books. The most amazing songwriter, he blinked and earthquakes happened - that's almost a Lennon phrase in itself and is probably best left as an image."
LUIS BUNUEL
Revolutionary film-maker and contemporary of surrealist artist Salvador Dali.
Manson: "He was the director that came before Jadorowsky and he was from the same school of thought as Salvador Dali. He filled his movies full of subversive ideas - they're not overtly shocking but they have some powerful messages. There's one particular film that I love that has a scene with a women carrying a switch-blade that is also a crucifix. His films caused religious riots and inspired a new approach to cinema."
EGON SHIELE
Cult artist.
Manson: "Shiele was a painter who has most inspired my work, a mad artist that I draw inspiration from in my watercolours. I discovered his work in art class in high school when you learn about things like that. He's not an artist that's particularly well known, but his work stuck with me. He really had a dark vision."
JACK PARSONS
Groundbreaking scientist and creator of the Atom bomb.
Manson: "I choose Jack Parsons because of his very significant role to the world, and particularly to America. He's probably most responsible for the creation of the Atom bomb and he was a Santanist. it's ironic that the person who created the power to destroy the world was doing it simply for the reason alone. He was a complex genius who used science to bring about the Apocalypse."
FRIEDRICH NIETZSCHE
Controversial writer philosopher.
Manson: "The one true voice of individuality. 'Antichrist Superstar' is a tribute to his work. He's been misinterprented because sometimes you can overlook the simple philosophies that he had, yet I still think that there's a lot to be learned from his writing. To blame Nietzsche for what happened in WWII (Hitler twisted Nietzsche's theories to suit his own cause - Historical Ed) is like blaming the bible for the Crusades."
