Welcome to Malcolm's Mail the monthly newsletter on recent happenings of note in our stable. Each month there will be stories about the stable and the people involved in it, as well as keeping you up to date with all other news from the stable. Champions Again ! Winners keep coming.!.!.! After last weekends racing on the 4th of April, we are now 3rd on the Trainers Championship , "HoT On ThE HeElS" of leaders L Laxon and J Meagher. We were successful with Breaker Morant in the 1200m sprint and for good measure we saddled the quinella with, Don't Surrender running a very close second after the two stablemates had a "ding-dong" battle over the last 150m. Breaker Morant got the deciding stride in right on the line to win by a nose. He was ridden by M Du Plessis as both our stable Jockeys were suspended. March 2002 Update High FIVES All Round !!! 8th March , will be a day with Malcolm Thwaites will not forget in a long while as he saddled Five of the Nine Winners. This is a record for the new Singapore Turf Club , but not for Malcolm. He has had Ten Winners over a meeting of two days before and although it was a long time ago, he thinks he may have six on one of the days. The night started out well winning the first three races with El Cid, Plato, and the promising Napoleon. Our other Winners on that day were, Breaker Morant and Inglenook. All except Breaker Morant were ridden by visiting Jockey, Alexis Beitia as Oscar Chavez who is our stable rider was suspended. The other Winner was ridden by Mark Du Plessis. .
2002 was another great year for the Thwaites stable with 75 winnerts for the season and Malcolm's third successive trainers Championship. With this Championship Malcolm has now won Six trainers titles in his career. At the start of the season it looked like it was going to be very hard to win the title with the horses we had in the stable however with Malcolms expert placing of the horses in races which they could be competitive we were able to hold off the challengers for the title. This year will be another tough fight but we will be doing our best to keep our title intact.
We are looking forward to this new season of racing in great anticipation as we have a large number of well bred young horses to keep the stable to the fore over the next few months. A large number of these have come from the Australian Racing Institute in Australia, one of our biggest, and most successful owners. Pat and Joanne the directors of the institute have been very good supporters of the stable. They have sent us a number of very nice young horses for this year including horses by Unbridled Song, Honour And Glory,St Jovite,Regal Classic and still to come horses by Octagonal, Woodman, and Carson City just to name a few. With horses like this coming our good association looks set to continue throughout the year.

Up and coming sprinter Storm Racer is set to tackle the feature sprint races in the next few months here in Singapore. He is due to have his toughest test to date in the E. W. Barker Memorial, over1400m, on the 26th of January and all going well he will then line up in the Lion City Cup, over 1200m, in early March. These races will be no walk in the park as the best horses in Singapore will be running in them ,however we think the "Gentle Giant" of Singapore racing will give them a "Big "fight.

Apprentices Firing Thwaites stable apprentices are on fire at the moment. Our apprentices S. John and M. Zaki have been to the fore . S John was the Champion Apprentice in Singapore in his first full season here in the year just finished ,with 22 winners, and our newest apprentice M. Zaki started off the year with a bang riding his first winner in Singapore aboard the stable runner Helios ,and then two races later capped off a great day by scoring again on outsider Niigata. Both boys have good potential and should keep kicking home the winners in the coming months.
