Pumpkin Festival a Hit

Melville School’s annual Pumpkin Festival took place Saturday, October 26. The tremendous turnout helped make the event fun and a financial success. Co-chairs Lisa Lafleur and Ray Nekrasz extend many THANKS

to all who toiled so hard to organize and run the festival. Thank you also to everyone who came and enjoyed the day at Melville.

Notes from Dr. Olson

It has been wonderful to see so many family members taking part in school activities! Your constant on-going support is very appreciated. Our first quarter flew by.

Report cards are distributed for grades 2, 3 and 4 on November 1, 2002. For students in preschool, kindergarten and grade 1, conferences take the place of report cards. Please make certain that you set aside some time to speak with each of your child’s teachers. Conference Day for many families will be on November 5, Election Day, that day was selected because schools were required to be closed. Rather than having schools closed conferences and election day, we combined the two. Therefore, this quarter is slightly shorter than usual and next quarter will be slightly longer.

We need parents to mark their calendars for Wednesday, December 4, at 8:45 AM. The visiting SALT team will be at Melville from December 2-6. There will not be evening interviews, thus, we have scheduled the meeting for early morning in the school’s library.

Last, on the following dates, school is closed:

November 5 - Election Day

November 11 - Veterans’ Day

November 28, 29 - Thanksgiving Holidays

December 23 to January 1 - Holiday Recess

Classroom News

Mrs. Weymouth

Mrs. Weymouth’s first grade class has been observing and comparing woodland animals and plants and freshwater animals and plants. Each week students look at a different organism, i.e. tree seedling, moss, elodea, guppies, snails, bess beetle and sow bugs. Sometimes the class uses a microscope that is connected to out computer so they can really see the organism clearly.

Mrs. Heller

Fourth grade students in Mrs. Heller’s class put their art and math skills to good use by making posters to advertise the Pumpkin Festival. The focus of the assignment was on rounded/estimated numbers and exact numbers. Hopefully you saw the students’ creative work displayed around the school when you were at the Pumpkin Festival.

The class is also utilizing it’s writing skills by working on a class newsletter to keep their families informed of class activities. The first copy of www.4thgrade-facts.com was recently published with the help of Mrs. Leonard and Mrs. Komm.

Mrs. Combra

With Thanksgiving around the corner, Mrs. Combra’s class is planning on making cranberry bread (using Granny’s secret recipe) and reading Cranberry Thanksgiving.

As part of the third grade curriculum, the entire third grade traveled to Plimouth Plantation. Mrs. Combra’s class wrote thank you letters to MPTG to thank it for funding part of the trip. They had a good time and learned a how things have changed since the first Thanksgiving. Here are a few of their thoughts:

"...games children played. Pilgrim girls ran around. Then, they would sit down and whoever had the biggest dress puffed out the most wins!"

"I learned that Pilgrims lived in very small houses with sometimes over ten people."

"I learned Pilgrim’s clean pots and pans with buckets of water, not a dishwasher."

"One thing I learned was that they use a bladder for a football."

"One thing I saw was the Indians cooking a goose over a fire...they made tea with strawberry leaves and mints...they used oil instead of chapstick on their lips..."

REMINDER

Please don’t forget to vote November 5. Take an active part in the future of our school system.
