Angel Fish

ANGELFISH

Angel fish are a beautiful and graceful fish. They are a semi aggressive, hardy fish. They are from the Amazon Basin, and tend to grow very rapidly, getting to about 7 inches long. They are very territorial, and it is best to keep them in a seperate tank with thier own kind. If you add them to a tank with similar sized fish and keep them well fed, they may get along okay. If you add new fish to a tank containing angels, they will most likely be picked on by the angels. So it is best to buy them young (quarter sized) and add them to a tank with other species at the same time. Sexing Angel fish is very difficult. About the only way, is during spawning season. At this time, the male's genital papillae, is more pointed than the female. Angels are a family oriented fish, they will pair off, and protect their family from intruders, and often will protect each other. Angels, like a tank with lots of hardy plants, usually around the edges, and a clear center for swimming. The overall temperatures for angels, can vary between 75 and 82 degrees "F" PH of 6.8 to 7.3 Hardness of 6 to 9 DH (These are recommended for breeding) The Angel fish can tolerate higher rates, for a show only tank: The Fry, will be free swimming in about 5 days. The best foods to feed the new fry, is fresh hatched brine shrimp for the first 2 weeks, then a supplemental food can be slowly added to the diet. A partial water change should be done daily, to keep the tank as clean as possible for the new fry. A siphon is good for vacuuming up left over foods ect. but care must be taken not to vacuum up the fry. It takes about 2 1/2 to 3 months for the fry to grow to the size of a quarter. It is best if possible to remove the fry from the parents, however some pairs are pretty good parents and will care for the fry.
