24 June 2001

I've been monkeying around and haven't made time to write this week... It was an uneventful one anyway. On Saturday night we went out to dinner at 'The Crocodile' with a couple of Askan's colleagues and a British businessman who's been in Kampala for several years. It was an entertaining group - many stories from travels in Liberia, Congo, South Africa, Zimbabwe, and of course Uganda. The story behind the establishment of the first cellular network in Africa in the former Zaire during a civil war was pretty amazing. They were going in as diplomats and many aid organizations were shipping out. But apparently where there's risk there's reward.

On Sunday we tooled around Kampala looking at UTL towers and relay stations. It was a nice way to explore and find the best views from the hills that surround the city (Kampala is said to be surrounded by seven hills, like Rome.) We came across a family of Vervet monkeys on our last stop - the 'Panoramic Bar' located at the top of Tank Hill. The bar was a bit run down, but it had the best view of the city, friendly people, and the monkeys to entertain, so it was a nice find, particularly since we're moving into the neighborhood next week.
