Mt Pleasant's first school (1864), was a rented building on S. Main St. rented from John Kinney, while a new school building was being built. In September 1865, the new school was ready. It was on the outskirts of the Village, on the Northwest corner of Illinois & Church St. (now University Av.) This school was expanded twice. In 1882 the city built a new bigger school, Union School on Fancher Av., where the Sacred Heart Church's parking lot is, today.
