Republic Airlines was formed in 1979 when North Central Airlines and
Southern Airways merged. Additionally, Hughes Airwest also merged into
Republic in October of 1980. Aircraft registration number N721RW
represents one of the first Boeing 727-200 series aircraft delivered
to Hughes Airwest in August of 1976. When ownership of the aircraft
was transferred to Republic Airlines in 1980 it was assigned fleet
number 761. It served as one of eighteen 727-200 series aircraft that
were operated by the airline and one of eight 727-2M7(A) aircraft that
were acquired in the merger with Hughes Airwest (thus the RW in the
registration number). Republic Airlines eventually merged with
Northwest Airlines in October of 1986. The included aircraft is painted
in Republic's final red, white and gray scheme. The aircraft continues
to operate today in Northwest's fleet.
