In May of '78 MPG recorded their first album, "Stone City". They gathered all the equipment they could afford and set to work in the dining room of Pherd's parents. The electric guitar amplifier was actually an old Revere tube-type tape recorder Gene's grandmother gave him. With that vintage sound that no modern equipment can duplicate Moe laid down multiple guitar tracks. They also used a very old Echoplex machine, not for the echo but for overdubbing whole tracks. And to keep his parents' china collection from rattling or falling and breaking Pherd covered his drum heads with bath towels. The result of all of this was the sound that came to be known as Classic MPG.

While Moe handled all the electric guitar work Pherd provided percussion and vocals and Gene did acoustic guitar, vocals, and mixed the tracks on a tape deck they pulled out of a fire. Dave Muth, the All-American Bass Player, joined the band for a few songs and Cathy Zeffer graced the album with her angelic voice on a duet with Pherd. She played the 12-string guitar on the song too.
