The union has been recognized by the participants themselves for more than three years but it was only after the 1st MPDU Congress held last April 2-4, 2004 at the Ateneo de davao University that the union was formally formed.
The 14 schools that participated on the said congress were the Ateneo de Davao University, Ateneo de Zamboanga University, Brokenshire College, Holy Cross of Davao College, Liceo de Cagayan, Mindanao State University-Marawi, Notre Dame of Dadiangas College, Notre Dame of Marbel University ,Notre Dame of Tacurong College, Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Colleges, San Pedro College, University of the Philippines - Mindanao, University of Southeastern Philippines, and Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan.
The said congress has been successful with the help of the National Youth Commission and the sponsorship of the Humanities Division of the Ateneo de Davao University through the division chairperson Ms. Maricar Virtucio-Panda. Ms. Giselle Lou Dano, presently a faculty member of the Humanities Division, was the convenor of the congress.
