Why Do You Come To Church?

For over two centuries our congregation has existed.  And yet as we begin a third century, we are faced with challenges perhaps unprecedented in the history of Christianity in North America.  We in McVeytown are certainly not alone in facing these challenges, but neither are we exempt because of our rural location or family orientation.

As society, the media, and economic pressures conspire to erode traditional foundations of family and community, the Church struggles to find its place.  The reflexive Christianity many of us grew up with now seems to be losing its grip on mainstream America, imperiled by society’s drive toward individualism and the pursuit of pleasure.  Our children as they enter adulthood are less likely to continue their Christian journeys than any generation within living memory.

All of which causes the Session to examine the direction of our congregation.  Most of us have probably heard the adage “The church is always just one generation away from extinction.”  While I don’t believe the Presbyterian congregation of McVeytown stands on the precipice of extinction, neither can we afford to adopt Hezekiah’s attitude in 2 Kings “Will there not be peace and security in my lifetime?”  In other words, let the next generation take care of themselves.

Nearby in this newsletter you will find a survey form seeking your input regarding the mission and direction of the church.  Please take a moment to complete the survey and return it to the church.  Take time to express your opinions regarding our congregation’s direction to a session member.  Pray for our success as a congregation, sustaining and promoting God’s Word in McVeytown.
