At the end of the 2004-2005 program, students were asked to pass on a bit of wisdom to incoming students. The diversity of comments is a testament to the diversity of experiences.
Time management, don't sweat the small stuff, & learn how to write well. Live close to campus. You're going to need psychological attention. Don't go overboard on assignments. Enjoy the summer!! Enjoy NYC! Don't worry, you'll make it. Drinking is OK. Party hard, study some. Sleep while you can! This is an intense program, but you must remember to get out in the City and have fun too. Balance is key to outstanding performance and a fun learning experience. Don't let other people stress you out. Graduate school is just as much of a game as undergrad. You really aren't going to party as much as you think you are. Stand up for what you want! Take advantage of all the opportunities Columbia has to offer! Stay positive and don't quit during the summer. Be friendly and helpful to each other. Bring you own printer. Be prepared for job searching because it is not easy for everyone. Work hard, go to as many talks as possible, look for a job early. Know calculus before coming to SIPA. Drink beer and be happy. Enjoy. Check the economics very well. Make sure you really like math. Do a little bit at a time, don't procrastinate, and enjoy life as it is right now before all hell breaks loose. Audit classes in the spring! Good luck. Budget your time on subjects you are interested in, after all this is education. Work on class dynamics, it will facilitate the study process for everyone. Buckle down and drink up. One thing at a time. Relax, don't stress. Have fun learning. Don't bug out. Just chillax and enjoy the year. Work together and help each other because it makes everything much easier. Chill out, drink more wine, get more sleep. |
