Q: How long does it take to get a Black Belt?
A: Trainging is different for everybody. The more time you invest in your training, the more quickly you will progress. The average time spent on each Kyu belt (colour) is between six and nine months. Brown belt and black belts can take more than a year or two.
Q: Why take Karate?
A: Karate is an excellent martial art. It has different goals for different people, some seek fitness, some seek confidence, some a challenge. Karate can give all this to those who are willing to put in the effort.
Q: What is a Martial Art?
A: A martial art can be defined as a fighting system that adhere's itself to a philosophy. Where as a sport like boxing teaches its participants to fight, a Martial Art goes beyond mere fighting moves to develop a deeper meaning.
Q: How much does it cost to join the dojo?
A: The cost of joining the dojo is dependent on the program that you sign up for. For more information on membership costs, and durations, contact Bobbie Jean or sensei at the dojo.
Q: What does Goju mean?
A: Literally speaking Goju translates to Hard soft. The name represents the notion that this style of karate utilizes both the direct linear attacks and defences associated with a more 'hard' technique as well as the more gentle circular side to side motions of a 'soft' style. Goju was created by Chojun Miyagi sensei. He developed it from a martial art known as Naha-Te. Goju was named after a line from a Haiku poem.
