I.Samuel Burton; We learn about the early generations of the Burton family through the Federal Census records:
In 1850 Samuel Barton (Burton) is listed as a 44 year old farmer holding $700 worth of real estate. He was born in New Jersey and at the time of this census he lives with his family on the south side of Vermillion township in Livingston County, Illinois.
His wife, Anna, is 40 years old was born in New York. The children's birthdates and places show us how the family migrated from New York, where Mary was born in 1830, to Pennsylvania from 1835-38, where Matilda and John were born, on to Ohio from 1840-44 where the next three children were born, and finally to Illinois where the youngest, Samuel Delos was born in 1847.
We find on an Illinois Public Domain land tract sales database, that Samuel purchased 40 acres in Livingston Co. (at $1.25 per acre) on 17 Aug 1850. On 10 June 1851 a land patent of Federal lands shows the transfer of another 40 acres.
An LDS family record lists the marriage of Samuel and Anna (Marvin?) in the improbable year of 1859, but I have no evidence that this was the case.
The 1860 census finds the family at the same location, Samuel had died one year earlier, according to his headstone at Moon Cemetery. John is listed as the head of the household. Mary and Matilda are no longer at home; Susan and her husband Joseph Kine live with the family. Ezra, Betsy and Delos remain at home. They apparently prosper, as reported by their real estate.
Anna resumes her role as head of household in 1870, with 22 year old Delos doing the farming. An Elizabeth is also listed, but because of the birthdates we assume this to be his wife, not his sister.
By 1880 the only family members in Reading are Ezra Burton, his wife Martha, and son Frederik. His mother-in-law lives with them, and they have a boarder was born in 1806 at New Jersey.1,2,3,4 He married Anna Marvin circa 1830. He appeared on the census of 27 August 1850 at S. side of Vermillian Twsp., Livingston, IL.1 He died on 31 January 1859 at IL.5
A.Mary C. Burton was born in 1830 at NY.1 She appeared on the census of 1850 at Livingston, IL.1
She married Loren H. Mallery on 6 July 1853 at Livingston, IL.6,7 She died on 18 April 1901.6
B.Matilda Burton was born on 16 March 1835 at PA.1,6,2 She married Sylvester O'Neil on 18 October 1855 at Livingston, IL.2,7 She appeared on the census of 1860 at Reading, Livingston, IL.2 She married Peter McGovern on 26 February 1863 at LaSalle, IL.7 She died on 4 February 1904 at Streator, IL, at age 68.8
1.Charles O'Neil was born in 1858 at Reading, Livingston, IL.2 He appeared on the census of 1880 at Reading, Livingston, IL; Charles is found on the 1880 census with his aunt and family, Joseph & Susan (Burton) Kime. His occupation is listed as a school teacher.9 He married Lou A. Pratt on 16 December 1881 at LaSalle, IL; Marriage between a Charles M. O'Neill and Lou A. Pratt would seem to be this couple. Waiting verification.7

C.John Burton; John's obituary reads:
"To Mr. Burton can be applied the word "pioneer" in all of its meaning. He was a resident of this community (Streator Illinois) for seventy four years, his life stretches back over every phase of the city of Streator...
Mr. Burton was born at Erie, Penn. in the year 1837. When he was very young the family moved to Ohio, the decided to move to Illinois. The set our for Illinois when the boy was ten years of age, and he drove an ox-team from Central Ohio to Central Illinois...
Old residents of the community have ever associated Mr. Burton's name with the old-fashioned dances held throughout the country side in the days gone by. Mr. Burton was the expert fiddler of his day. Despite his advanced age, Mr. Burton made many trips to Streator, his headquarters being Brabbe's Drug Store, when he was in town. There he was often met by many younger friends who never tired of listening to his tales of "frontier days" - of Chief Shabbona, of the many other historic incidents associated with early life in this community" was born on 2 April 1837 at PA; On some records John is reported as born in Ohio, where the later children in the family were born. We believe it is correctly PA.10,3,11,9,2,12 He married Elizabeth L. Moore, daughter of Ebenezer Moore and Elizabeth Foster, on 11 October 1860 at Coalville RD IL.13 He appeared on the census of 1880 at Eagle Twsp, LaSalle, IL.9 He died on 14 January 1921 at Streator, IL, at age 83.14,5,15

5.Matilda Belle Burton; Matilda came from a large, rather "established" family, and seems quite an odd match (at least from this distance) for Jim Melody. Her first husband reportedly abandoned the family (although he apparently reappeared at inopportune times). She worked as a millinery, designing hats, she's no doubt wearing one of the creations in the wedding photo!
She was a very short lady. She lived all her life in Streator, IL, reaching 81 years old was Catholic. She was born on 14 October 1869 at Streator, IL. She appeared on the census of 1880 at Eagle Twsp, LaSalle, IL.9 She married Fran Bussard, son of Isaac Bussard and Catharine Crowl, on 23 February 1887 at LaSalle, IL.18,7 She and Fran Bussard were divorced circa 1892. She married James Andrew Melody, son of Christopher Melody and Bridget Mclaughlin, on 29 September 1894.17 She died on 13 December 1950 at Streator, IL, at age 81.14,11

(4)Donald John Karsky Sr.; Don was born in Diagonal IA, the family moved to Pine City MN when he was very young. As a youth he worked at the local movie theatre, and later bought his own theatre in North Branch. He served in Europe in the Army during WW II, and worked for many years in the auto body trade. He married Dorothy Cabak, they moved to North Branch MN in 1950.
They operated the Family theatre from 1960-84, when they retired to enjoy traveling, and family. Don liked to collect and record different kinds of music. He was one of the first to own a tape recorder in the early 60s, and made early recordings with family members. along with his early 8mm movies, he leaves us some great documentation of the Karsky family.Some other hobbies he enjoyed are woodworking (he once built a fold-in-half boat in the basement), ham radio communication, fishing, gardening, working crossword puzzles. He could sing, and treated us all to some humerous ditties. During their years in the "house at the lake", he would feed the birds, sometimes right out of his hand is still living.
