Irony: The yin&yang of literary elementIrony is when someone expects a certain outcome, and then something else happens. Irony is a form of spontaneous change that occurs when least expected. Irony is in everyday of my life whereever I go. It can occur at any point without warning. One way irony has existed in my life was when I thought my girl friend was pregnant, although she was and I was excited the baby ended up dying in her stomach. I knew the baby was coming, however I did not know it was going to die and that was the irony of that situation. The poem "Richard Cory" by Edward Arlington Robinson is ironic. The story tells of a man who has everything, or so it seems. In the poem on the fourth line of the second verse and the second line of the third verse he was compared to a king, a gentlemen, and a man of grace and glitter when he walked. People envied Richard Cory for the things he had, and the life style he led. However little did the people know his life style wasn't the best. These people wanted to be him because he had the finer things, yet he still managed to take his own life. The irony in this is that Richard Cory was never happy. The people made him happy because they spoke so highly of him, and that is how they viewed his life. What the people of the town did not know was Ricard Cory had his own problems that were so bad that no matter what he had could allow him to keep his own life. The thing with irony is that it is inevitable because it works on its own. I say this because irony can not be timed, nor can it be monitored, only created. Irony is a spontaneous event that can not be controlled therefore making it impossible to avoid. For example in the story "The Most Dangerous Game" by Richard Connell the hunter Rainsford asked Whiteny if the hunted ever had feelings. Whitney explained to Rainsford how he was being obsured and that its survival of the fittest. However the irony of this was that when Rainsford meets the general his own question is answer with hisself being hunted. He realizes that no matter who or what it is, and no matter what the case both sides feel a certain way during the hunt. What Rainsford found the most ironic out of everything was that man was the biggest and most dangerous game of all when he has been hunting animals his whole life. Another form of irony is how we now have a African American President. What's so ironic about this is that for hundreds of years African Americans were ridicule for singing in the White House, or eating in the White House for color reasons. Yet now there is an African American running our country. In addition to this the house that he lives in as well as the other presidents and founding father who occupied the White House in office was built by slaves. Not just any slaves but African Americans. Who would have thought that the same ethnic group that created the home for presidents would change history and be a president. This is the reason why I define irony as an unexpected turn of events because the outcome of any situation will never be as expected whether the outcome is good or bad. In conclusion Irony is all around us it can change who we are, and how we live. we have seen these aspects of the topic from the death of Richard cory, as well as the jaw dropping ending of "The Dangerous Game". It will always be around to adapt to everything, and anything. In my opinion without irony then where is the fun in live? How would we really "LIVE"?
