PLOT
Maximus is a trusted general in the Roman army and a close friend to the ailing Emperor Marcus Aurelius. After the emperor's jealous son orders Maximus and his family killed, Maximus escapes death only to be sold into slavery. Becoming a fierce gladiator, he then seeks revenge.

WHAT I SAY

I don't often go to the theatre to see a movie more than once, but I saw this THREE times! And it just got better with every viewing. Crowe as a revenge-seeking gladiator burned up the screen and Phoenix made jealous rages an art form. It is definitely an "event movie" as the battle scenes are numerous...not to mention bloody and violent. The plot is as old as Rome for Hollywood standards but it didn't disappoint in entertaining me.
