The New York Times was founded on September 18, 1851 by Henry Jarvis Raymond and George Jones as the New-York Daily Times.

(Raymond had worked for Horace Greeley on the New York Tribune, served as speaker of the New York State Assembly and later would become a founding director of the Associated Press (in 1856).
