| Bad Boys (1995) Rating: 7/10 Review date: October 1, 2003 When $100 million worth of heroin is stolen from a police lockup, two narcotics cop are assigned to the case with only 72 hours before they are shut down by Internal Affairs. Detective Mike Lowrey is a rich bachelor while his partner, Detective Marcus Burnett is a normal family man. Matters become even more complicated when a witness appears and they have to protect her as well as pretending to be each other Director Michael Bay really shines in this directorial debut which is an early look on his directing ability as proven in his later movies. The excellent score which is already thumping at the beginning sounds very satisfying and the same thing can be said for the action scenes. There are plenty of cool gunfights and huge explosions as well. They are all shot nicely with great camera work and should be able to satisfy any action movie fans. On top of all that we have Martin Lawrence and Will Smith. Without these two guys, I believe Bad Boys would have just been an average or even worse action comedy. Their banters are just very funny even though there is a great amount of profanity involved as well (not that I care). Well, what more can I say about Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. Nothing else I guess, except that they are one of the funniest pair of actors that Ive ever seen. Some of the jokes are not even scripted; Bay himself said that he encouraged the two leads to improvise thus proving how great a comedians Lawrence and Smith are. Tea Leoni as Julie Mott performed very well although I truly did not understand why almost in every scene that she is in, she has to show her thighs, now whats that all about? Tcheky Karyo as Fouchet is the cold-blooded bad guy. His acting was alright, doesnt offer anything interesting except too look bad. When you really look at it very closely, Bad Boys is actually a very ordinary movie. First of all, the plot is very clichd and this whole cop-buddies action comedy has been done many times before. The storyline is also very simple and there is not much acting required. However, kudos should go to both leads on successfully delivering their lines in a very comical and natural manner which totally cracks me up. Praise should also go to Michael Bay for being able to inject some fresh air into this otherwise ordinary and clichd flick. *Trivia* The Porsche 911 used in the opening scene of the film belongs to Michael Bay.
